100 Year 9 students watch Romeo and Juliet at the Globe Theatre

On Monday 4th March, 100 Year 9 students took part in an exciting trip to Shakespeare’s original Globe theatre to watch a performance of Romeo and Juliet. This was an incredible opportunity to engage in some enriching culture and performance on the Southbank and all for free, as Deutsche Bank kindly fund this annual “Playing Shakespeare” programme.

As pictured, 30 of our brilliant Y9s had an authentic Elizabethan “groundling” experience and stood to watch the performance in the  yard (or pit), directly in front of the stage. This was particularly exciting as members of the Capulet and Mercutio “gangs” encircled the yard, on bikes performing stunts. This made our students more than just spectators but actual participants in the performance! This was of course a modern interpretation of Shakespeare’s best known tragedy, Romeo and Juliet.

We were blessed with dry weather for this school trip, considering that this famous theatre is open air!  Thank you to the Globe for hosting us and the teachers who accompanied this trip and made it possible.
